About the Courses
Orangeburg Festival of Roses
The Orangeburg Festival of Roses, an attraction named as a top-twenty tourism event by the Southeastern Tourism Society, is one of the most beautiful festivals in the country. This celebration has taken place in the Edisto Memorial Gardens since its inception in 1972. Approximately 40,000 visitors converge annually to witness the splendor of the Gardens at this time of year and take part in the many activities. 2006 marks the 35th Annual Festival of Roses. For directions and lodging information, call 1-800-545-6153 or visit www.orangeburgsc.net.
12K Run
The 12K Run begins at 7:30 a.m. This is a USATF Certified Course (#SC99005BS) and is the South Carolina State Championship 12K for the Palmetto Grand Prix. Strictly Running will professionally time runners for accuracy. Since its inception in 1999, this challenging 12K race has produced 11 state records. The course has 4 significant inclines, some rolling terrain, and plenty of flat racing surface.
5K Run/Walk
The 5K Event begins at 9:00 a.m. This course is USATF Certified Course (#SC99004BS). Strictly Running will professionally time runners for accuracy. Although a predominately flat course, a moderate incline in mile 2 will challenge racers.
Pediatric Clinic Fun Run
This non-competitive event for the whole family begins at 8:45 a.m. All registrants will receive a T-shirt and participation award. Join in the Fun!
Double Down 17K
Up to the challenge of running both the 12k and 5k races. You can register and race both in 2009. There will be a double down award male and femal this year.
Blackwater Adventure Duathlon (Run and Kayak)
The event takes place in two different places, so there is a break between the run and kayak. Run the 12k in the morning at Rose Festival Road Race, then tackle the 7 mile Blackwater race on the Edisto river at 1:00 p.m. Fastest combined times win. There is a potential to win 3 awards: one for each event (Run, Double and Duathlon).
The kayak portion of the race takes place on the Edisto river starting at the Shillings Bridge Road "Baughman's landing" (see map above). The Blackwater canoe and kayak race is actually a seperate event that starts at 1:00 p.m. The north fork of the Edisto is a windy, technical route with many challenges, inlcuding getting over or around obstacles such as fallen trees and strainers. The route is a natural beauty with little to no development. You can google map shillings bridge road and find the landing. The route ends at the glover street landing in Orangeburg.
